Visual Cognition

Japanese version

Lab's Web page
The research areas of the Cognitive Psychology cover the following topics: 1) spatial attention and visual consciousness, 2) interaction between emotion and cognition, especially attentional control, 3) functional properties of various visual behaviors that usually occurred in our daily life, and psychological issues of human-computer interaction.
Details of our research topics are as follows.

  1)  Relationship between attention and emotion. Automatic attentional control is explored with emotional stimuli like facial expressions.

  2)  Emotional control of attention is investigated with various experimental tasks such as spatial cueing by emotional stimuli, control of spotlight size by emotional valence, arousal monitoring with pupillometry.

  3)  Other research topics we are now increasing our efforts include various topics on high level visual cognition including eye tracking research of comprehension processes of diagrams, poster design, and Manga comics. In addition, studies investigating psychological aspects of computer use and its effects on human-computer interaction are currently being conducted in our lab.
